jkbx.fm is the internet's jukebox. Right now, it's a minimalistic web app that delivers a continuous, 24/7 stream of independent music in a pixel-art jukebox. The site serves as a fun project piece, a quirky corner of the web, a retro place to host my and my friends' music onlineat the start, 95% of the music on jkbx.fm was either made or co-produced by me. At this point, there's not even a skip button. But I've asked. And the people have spoken [go to a research study about ppl wanting this]. They want to have their own jukebox on the web. So it's time to share the juke, and make a social music hub.
there are two main projects:
- build the single stream, mainpage, central jukebox.
- build the user-based, jkbx.fm/yourNameHere version.
initial business strategy prioritizes early market validation for the mainpage MVP [href to "do people want this?" section], allowing us to stay light. in the future[href to in the future section], we want to have features like live chat, share, likes, listen history, easy artist donation, and page customization.
but why?
(problem and solution)
streamers are a bad deal for artists, and they're boring. here's the artists' perspective.
distribution
i can't just upload to spotify...gotta use a middle man
direct upload
you can put your own music on your own jukebox
Around 100,000 songs are uploaded to Spotify a day. that's 36 Million songs a year. good luck with that.
as an early adopter you'll grow bigger as the platform does. get more eyes [see if can cite some examples of ppl profiting off early]
payouts are abysmal
we're going to fight to be equitable, and incorporate brand new revenue streams for artists. as early adopters you're a bigger part of the pie
connection
jkbx will foster a stronger, more social connection between listener and artist
With more control over the presentation of your music
youre at the whim of the algorithm. the music on jkbx is artist uploaded and no-skip jkbxs embrace being in the present moment
There's nowhere else you can put your music online in a jukebox.
early design ideas
At this point in the phase, I figured the pause button would actually just function as a mute button.
